About Sister Cities
International |
| Sister
Cities International (SCI) is a non-profit citizen diplomacy
organization with branches in over 121 countries. Founded in
1956, after World War 2, the U.S. sister cities program was established
to promote, at the community level, a global network of private
citizens, municipal officials, and business leaders for the purpose
of strengthening cultural understanding, stimulating economic
development, and conducting long-term projects of mutual benefit.` |
| The
Saratoga Springs/Chekhov Sister City Partnership has been ongoing
since an introductory visit by a citizen of Saratoga Springs,
New York, to Chekhov, Russia, in September 2000, and the formal
establishment of a sister city relationship on May 22, 2001,
when the mayor of Saratoga Springs and his delegation visited
Chekhov to attend the annual International Chekhov Theater Festival
at Melikhovo, Anton Chekhov's estate outside the city. |
